You know the drill by now. Words are thrown at the internet; some stick, and then the music. Tangents – it’s all those bloody tangents; I once witnessed Aidan Moffat conducting a game of musical chairs in the gap before The Phantom Band took to the stage, and found it to be one of the most moving experiences of my life. Seriously. You could read the internal struggle smeared all over Aidan’s bearded chops; the compulsion to be faithful to the parlour game’s aesthetic, verses the age-old quandary of “what the fuck am I doing here? Ornette Coleman never gets roped in to chaperone musical chairs”. Which is probably a useful summation of Arab Strap’s output over the years (Aidan and Malcolm Middleton have recently covered Slow Club’s ‘Two Cousins 1999’, purely because Slow Club asked. “It’s not an Arab Strap performance as such, rather it’s the two guys who used to be Arab Strap recording their own, informed pastiche,” says Aidan with a twinkle in his eye; the story and track live here).
Below the words: ‘I Got You Babe’. Yes – that one, only marinated in Monsieur Moffat’s usual slow-burn enchantment. This is how the tangents have left me; susceptible to cover version likeage.
